How To Do The Long Tail Cast On
I use the long tail cast on method more than any other knitting cast on technique. I'm not sure if that's just because of the projects that I'm doing or maybe because it's the first cast on method I ever learned, but that's just how it goes.
To determine how much of a tail to leave before making the slipknot, I usually cast on 5 or 10 stitches then measure how much yarn that took up and multiply out to determine the length needed (plus a little extra just to be safe).

Beginning Knitting - Casting On and Off (Long-tail)
A simple tutorial on using the most common cast on, and how to cast off once you're finished knitting.
The method I use here is called the "long-tail" or "slingshot" cast on. I'm using black yarn on size 11US (8.0mm) needles.
For the cast off I'm using the same yarn on size 13US (9.0mm) needles.

Casting on - estimating tail length
The first step of long tail cast on is estimating the length of the tail, which you do by leaving about 5 inches and wrapping the yarn around the needle the same number of times as the amount you want to cast on.
