Long tail cast on - Knitting Paradise - Forum

I have been knitting for a very long time and have always used the cable cast on but quite a few newer patterns call for the long tail method.

I haven't used this method before and was wondering what are the advantages of doing so?

Cable cast on is a very good one to use but it can sometimes be a little tight. Long tail also produces a firm edge, like cable, with a pretty pattern of bumps on one side and a...

Tubular Cast on for 2x2 rib

If you have worked a tubular cast on for 1x1 rib  before the chances are that you used a variation on the stocking stitch method, it seems to be the most common. You can also work a tubular cast on for 2x2 rib using any of the other methods for 1x1 rib and rearrange the stitches.

Provisional tail tubular cast on is done in THREE PHASES:

The first phase consists of the cast on.

The second phase consists of four foundation rows: two on the front and two on the back.

The third phase consists of the true 1x1 ribbing.

Learn Something New: The Tubular Cast-On - Interweave

Most of us use the long-tail cast-on for just about everything we knit.

There are a few things, though, that benefit from a special cast-on, and it's good to have a few in your repertoire.

The tubular cast-on is one of those. It's very stretchy, so it's useful for socks, mittens, gloves, and hats. It's also the perfect beginning for ribbing, which it mimics. The edge looks rolled over; it appears...

Also, this bind off is the companion to the Long Tail Tubular Cast On , so be sure to check out that tutorial for those occasions when you start with a ribbed edge too!

Materials

You will need a spare circular or double pointed needle, equal or smaller than your working needle and long enough to accommodate half your stitches. In this tutorial, my spare needle is the wooden double pointed needle and my working needle is the metal circular needle.

You will also need a tapestry needle.

Note

This technique works both for knitting in the round or flat.

The example shown below is for a 1 x 1 rib. This method can be easily...

Tubular cast-on without the waste

Tubular cast-on the Italian way is done without the extra yarn in contrasting color. It's no better or worse than the way it's done in the US. The result is identical: only the process differs. I like it because there is no unnecessary waste and you don't have to worry about finding a sacrificial yarn...

Between the epsom-salt bath you take for your tired feet and the petal-strewn, candle-lit bath you prepared for that second date.

Finishing touches are special, because they require...

Crochet rib Tubular Cast On

The reason I like this cast on is because it really "unzips" so much easier than how I used to do it. Before I saw this clever method I used to take scrap yarn and make crochet chains and knit into them. Like it's demonstrated here . However when I was ready to pull the scrap yarn out I always had a bit of a problem it would not just "unzip" like I thought it would I would always have to cut and pull it out stitch by stitch. The technique where you actually crochet stitches on to the knitting needle is much more efficient....
