Long tail cast on - Knitting Paradise - Forum

I have been knitting for a very long time and have always used the cable cast on but quite a few newer patterns call for the long tail method.

I haven't used this method before and was wondering what are the advantages of doing so?

Cable cast on is a very good one to use but it can sometimes be a little tight. Long tail also produces a firm edge, like cable, with a pretty pattern of bumps on one side and a...

Knitting Tip - How much yarn to leave when making long tail cast on

by Ratcha

(Maryland)

Before I learned about this knitting tip, I used to leave too little or too long of yarn when casting on using a long tail method.

I've learned that leaving about an inch of yarn per a stitch would give me just about the right amount of yarn to do my long tail cast on. For example, if I wanted to cast on 30 stitches, I would...

Knitting:

The Long-Tail Cast On

The Long-Tail Cast on is often referred to by many other names in the knitting community. Some of which include but are not limited to Sling Shot, Continental, and Two Strand.

In my opinion, this is one of the best of the most basic cast ons. Why you ask?

It is versatile.

It is stretchy without being too loose.

The cast on actually creates a knit row of...

Long Tail Cast On Knitting Method

The long tail cast on or double cast on is one of the most popular and quickest cast on knitting methods. Once you know how I bet it's going to be the only method you use.

Long-Tail Cast (see below)

Long-Tail Cast On

The last of these methods, long-tail cast on, is possibly the favorite method for beginners and experienced knitters alike. This method uses two strands of yarn; a long tail and the strand of working yarn connected to the ball. New stitches are made by drawing loops of the working yarn through loops from the long tail. In this way a foundation of loops...

Knitting Fundamentals: 5 Different Ways to Cast On

The long tail cast-on is one of the most common cast-on methods. This is because it's extremely versatile. While it helps create an even edge (something that can sometimes be difficult to create with the single cast-on method), it's also a great cast-on to use on projects in which you may want a fairly elastic edging.

In addition to all of this, it's also useful to note that this method also...

How to Cast On: Long Tail Cast-On | KnittingHelp.com

This is my favorite cast on method, I use it almost exclusively. It creates an even, stretchy edge that works well for stockinette stitch or for ribbing. It's easy to knit from, easy to pick up stitches from, and is probably the fastest cast-on, once you get the hang of it. It's even faster than Single Cast-On when you take into account that this method creates an already knitted row (technically, anyway...but patterns don't count...

Learn Something New: The Tubular Cast-On - Interweave

Most of us use the long-tail cast-on for just about everything we knit.

There are a few things, though, that benefit from a special cast-on, and it's good to have a few in your repertoire.

The tubular cast-on is one of those. It's very stretchy, so it's useful for socks, mittens, gloves, and hats. It's also the perfect beginning for ribbing, which it mimics. The edge looks rolled over; it appears...

Crochet rib Tubular Cast On

The reason I like this cast on is because it really "unzips" so much easier than how I used to do it. Before I saw this clever method I used to take scrap yarn and make crochet chains and knit into them. Like it's demonstrated here . However when I was ready to pull the scrap yarn out I always had a bit of a problem it would not just "unzip" like I thought it would I would always have to cut and pull it out stitch by stitch. The technique where you actually crochet stitches on to the knitting needle is much more efficient....
