Arm Knitting Basics

Christa demonstrates the basics of Arm Knitting, starting with Casting On using the long tail method, then knitting Row 1 (working from stitches on your right arm) and Row 2 (working from stitches on your left arm) then finishing with Binding Off.

The yarn she is using is 4 strands of Cascade 220 held together - use two skeins wound into centre-pull balls, and you can work with a strand from the inside and outside of each ball.

Double-Wrap Long Tail Cast On

I developed this cast on to work with the Double Garter stitch pattern which can be viewed as a separate video. Both are used in the Breakers cowl pattern found in my book, Tempest and sold individually on my website (http://holliyeoh.com/designs/breakers/) and Ravelry.

Two different methods of working the cast on are demonstrated.

Tempest is a collection of handknit patterns by Vancouver knitwear designer, Holli Yeoh, for the artisan hand-dyed yarn company, SweetGeorgia Yarns. This video,...

Extra Long, Long Tail Cast-On Knitting Tip

I needed to be sure I wouldn't run out of yarn when casting on 404 stitches for my next project.

This might not be ideal for every project. A fine lace baby blanket, for example, might not suit having that little extra bulk of yarn sewn into the corner, but for something with a seam, like a garment or a cushion cover, I think it would be fine.

For another method and some great tips, here's a video by VeryPinkKnits.

German Twisted Cast On

This cast on provides the perfect balance between stretch and structure. It is similar to the Long Tail Cast On but each stitch gets an extra twist, giving it that touch of added stretch that makes it so wonderful.

I use the German Twisted Cast on for almost anything that needs a firm but stretchy edge – for socks, hats and gloves it is my number one go to cast on method.

I have also heard this cast on referred to as the Old Norwegian Cast On.
