Long-tailed Hermit Hummingbird - The Virtual Rainforest

The Long-tailed Hermit is a medium-sized hummingbird found in the lowland rainforests of Central America. The long central tail feathers are both showy and functional, allowing the hummingbird to adjust its position ever-so-slightly with a small pump of the tail. The curved beak is specialized for feeding on curved-tube flowers like Heliconia.

While at the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center I observed a male Long Tailed Hermit hummingbird declaring his territory quite energetically. A few minutes later I was lucky to be able to see an interaction between 'my' bird and a potential interloper.
