Long-tailed Duck Close-up
I returned for another look at the Long-tailed Duck at Carnsew Pool. This time it came in a good deal closer and in the sunshine it was too good an opportunity to miss!

Marsh Harrier & a Long Tailed Duck - RSPB Leighton Moss
The long tailed duck was spotted and pursued for half an hour by a female Marsh Harrier. Keep an eye on the water below the harrier as the duck surfaces gasping for air. The harrier hovers overhead. I have freeze framed part of the footage to get a closer look at the duck. The whole episode took around 30 mins. I have edited it down to around 6 mins. Male Long-tailed duck on Victoria Island, Nunavut
A male long-tailed duck (formerly called the Oldsquaw) calls and then dives under the ice on a small pond near One-Eyed Jack Lake on Victoria Island, Nunavut. The males are very noisy when they first arrive on their northerly migration, chasing each other around and generally having an exciting time before getting down to the serious business of mating. Their yodelling call is a a real highlight of spring on the tundra.

In mid-March, filmed a flock of Long-tailed Ducks off Long Beach Island in New Jersey. That's near the southern end of their habitat. These birds range as far as the Arctic Circle in summer. My narration explains their habits.

This is playtime with Bering, the Long Tailed Duck (not Pin Tailed as mentioned in the video... midwest roots get the better of me). Bering had to talk to me well before he was ever fed in a behind the scenes tour and we continued the relationship... as you can see.

Long-tailed Ducks on Lake Ontario Feb 2016
Lake Ontario hosts thousands of Long-tailed Ducks during the winter. They feed on Zebra Mussels and are close to shorelines. Their scientific name Clangula hyemalis means Noisy Winter Duck. Their vocalizations can be heard in the video. Frenchman's Bay in Pickering, near Toronto on 21 and 28 February 2016.
